Checking for Signs of Being Overweight

With health becoming more and more of a growing concern, people nowadays adapt all means possible to keep their weight in check to avoid obesity. Suddenly, all the weight reduction stuff are being sold with a high demand and people find themselves making a shift into an active lifestyle. Conscious people see to it that they are not overweight  or obese and maintain health for many different reasons - some to maintain their regular state because of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, but for a bigger part of that health-conscious population, not being overweight has become the main thing to look out for.

For starters, being overweight these days is not simply a question of looking too fat or not being able to fit in one’s clothes. The gears have shifted to that being overweight has become a matter of being fit for one’s age. On a general note, being overweight can factually be told by looking at one’s body mass index versus his height. A state of balance must be present between width and length of the body.

There are a lot of ways which you can use to check if you are already overweight. The most popular one being the one previously mentioned. Checking for a person’s BMI or Body Mass Index is the most basic type of checking for being overweight. In here, the weight and the height are the important factors to be considered. The BMI also changes relatively according to the age of the person. For children, a different range is being followed as compared to that of adults. Moreover, a different BMI can also be considered for body builders and other more muscularly built people.

Aside from checking the BMI, you can also check for signs of being overweight through your waist circumference. Although people generally have different means of storing the excess fat in their bodies, both men and women usually have these elastic storage spaces located at the lower part of their body. For men, signs of becoming overweight may become apparent on the area of the abdomen while for women, it can be seen by the build up of fat around the thighs onto their hips. By checking for the waist circumference and tracking changes at the mentioned fat storage areas, you can check if signs of being overweight are already surfacing.

Apart from these, the skin fold technique is also used to check for signs of being overweight. What happens here is that the skin is being measured through pinches or calipers. This is being done at different points on the body so that the thickness of the fat layer, which is considered to be subcutaneous, can be measured and determined. Experts will use a certain formula to check for any signs of abnormal fatty build up.

Another type of weighing used to check for impending signs of obesity is the hydrostatic weighing method. This particularly makes use of the Archimedes principle wherein the body becomes completely submerged beneath the water and the buoyant force is expected to produce the displacement necessary for the person to fit in the space. This method is often used in specific research labs and is rather elaborate in process.
