Obesity and Fast Foods

It is common knowledge that obesity is a cause of a lot of things. Its just as common to overlook the main prevailing cause of obesity – Yeah, we are talking food here. Obesity is a product of what we eat and just what might it be in the food that we eat that pushes us to become obese?  Case in point here is about fast food. Fast food saves one’s time, but that’s primarily it. When it’s fast food, we can not expect too much with respect to nutrients that are contained in it. We can only expect it to satiate our hunger. It’s simple - Fast food is considered to be the biggest proprietor of obesity. No wonder a place tagged for its wonderful fast food is a breeding ground for morbid obesity.

So what is it with fast food that makes it intertwined with obesity? It’s primarily all the loaded fat and calories. You should care to notice that most fast food is typically fried until they are edible enough to be eaten. Have you ever seen fast food salad? Or fast food barbecued or grilled? Or may be even steamed? When it’s fast food, more often than not it is fried. Plus, fast food is noted for the flavor it has. This is because it contains lots of condiments which we can often do without. We must also note that fast food comes inevitably packed with more than a fare  pinch of salt.

Apart from these things, fast food is also packed with preservatives. Over the years, the fast food industry has seen how marketable it is to all kinds of people for two main reasons: it’s fast and it’s tasty. People would rather devote much of their time working than cooking because the former produces money. Out of this simple notion, the fast food industry has found a way to tap into the economic sector of society. It presented itself as a foolproof way of saving time and devoting it otherwise to work. Grab a hotdog and off you go—this is what the fast food industry lives on. And with food that gets cooked easily, you cannot expect the most careful preparations to take place.

Preservatives have also become an essential ingredient of fast food because it ensures a steady supply for consumers. Fresh food will easily get spoiled and rotten if left for a long period of time. With more and more people tapping the fast food industry, internal competition among fast food businesses is on an all time high. So in order to compensate and continuously compete with the growing market, preservatives needed to be placed in the food to ensure that regardless of how the consumer market fluctuates, there will always be food to be served to the customers.

Fast food and obesity are almost partners in life. With food that does not receive the right kind of preparation that it needs, all the important nutrients get lost. Although preservatives play their own part in most foods we eat, having them in exorbitant amounts is definitely not good. Fast food may be fast but it does not necessarily mean that it is all good. It may be able to save you a substantial amount of time, but it won’t save your health during the process. So, the next time you are ready to grab something fast and fatty, consider alternatives.
